Creatine Six Star is one of the biggest brands on the market and is owned by MuscleTech, which you have likely heard of before.
As far as we could tell from the marketing and who they advertise for sport-based athletes such as football players, baseball players, and basketball players.
This is surprising as most creatines are geared towards gym-type trainees such as bodybuilders and powerlifters.
Although they have centered their efforts on team sports; there will still be some crossover with individual sports like bodybuilding, and so just because it’s aimed at a particular type of athlete doesn’t mean that it won’t serve somebody who just wants to build a little muscle or improve their workout performance.
The Taste Test
First, we have the taste test, which for a lot of people is one of the most important elements of how they rate a creatine powder, or even a pre-workout or post workout shake for that matter.
With so many options available on the market, there’s little room for error with taste, and one bad experience can hurt the reputation of a product.
We pre-purchased the fruit punch flavor ahead of time as this looked the most appetizing out of the flavors, and mixed it with a still glass of water.
Many creatines are designed to be combined with a protein shake, however, we didn’t want to mask the flavor with another flavored protein powder so we could give the best review.
Once mixed with water, it has a bright color to it and mixes quite well.
Now for the moment, you’ve all been waiting for; the taste.
Overall it was a pleasant taste and many people will enjoy the flavor compared to other similar brands on the market.
However they didn’t quite get a taste right, and rather than being a mixture of different berries, it mainly had the taste of cherry.
We would like to see more improvement in the taste side of things, but honestly, it’s more about how creatine gets on in the workout test that matters the most.
Now let’s take a look at what the creatine Six Stars has to offer in terms of nutritional input.
Surprisingly, this scoop contains 120 calories per serving which is a vital bit of information, especially for those that are dieting and need to make sure every calorie counts.
Whilst it’s not a big deal if you are in a gaining phase; for those that are needing to be mindful of calories you need to weigh up the benefits of having a creatine source that includes calories as this could potentially take a substantial chunk out of your daily calorie quota.
It contains 19 grams of carbohydrates per serving, which can be looked at either way.
Awesome if you are looking to utilize carbohydrates for your workouts, but bad news if you are trying to adhere to a lower-carb diet, i.e. ketogenic or something similar.
Now we look at how many grams of creatine you get per serving. This tub will offer 8 grams of creatine per serving, which is a lot more than the typical serving size you see with this type of product.
Normally a serving size is around 5 grams per serving, and most of the research is based on.
In terms of the creatine blend, they use a combination of monohydrate and creatine HCI, which tends to be easier on the stomach than a standard monohydrate which has the tendency to cause some bloating in certain people.
We’re glad that it’s monohydrate, though, as this blend has the most research behind it.
Besides this, the X3 tub also contains Branched Chain Amino Acids, or BCAAs, which help to promote muscle building, especially leucine which has shown to be the most important BCAA in the research.
However, because it’s a proprietary blend we don’t know how big the serving is for each BCAA and so wouldn’t be able to say for certain whether it’s an effective dosage of leucine.
It also includes glycine, L-arginine, and L-methionine, which are more amino acids.
Further research is needed on these particular amino acids for helping to support muscle building and improving a workout performance, and we’re not sure why they have been included in the stack, other than to perhaps add more items.
Overall we were happy with the ingredients in comparison to cost, and you’re getting a good price for this particular brand.
However, if you want to stick to the more researched and lower dose of 5 grams per serving without any of the added ingredients you could find better alternatives.
After taking the creatine from Six Star it was time to try out a workout. We tested this over 4 full weeks of training, with 4x full body sessions per week.
Overall we felt good in our training, and felt that we had a few extra reps in the tank towards the end of sets.
Although it’s always difficult to tell as this could have simply been the placebo effect; however we still felt the effort continued into the latter weeks and our performance didn’t dip.
The only real issue we had was with leg sessions where we found it difficult to maintain momentum throughout the workout, but that might be because we added more volume on these exercises.
Overall this is a solid supplement from Six Star that would fit most athletes or regular gym goers supplement stack.
It’s also a great option if you are lacking in amino acids in your diet and would like an all-in-one supplement that also tops up your amino acid numbers.
This would be ideal for those that habitually consume a lower protein diet, or for vegetarian and plant-based dieters.
However, if you’re just looking for a creatine supplement at a standard dose per serving, then you could find other alternatives in this price range, and below.
One issue is that this is a proprietary blend meaning that we don’t know how much of each amino acid is present in a serving.
And not knowing this, in particular the leucine content, is vital for knowing how effective a dose it would be.
It’s also high in calories, which won’t be an issue for those in a gaining phase, but may dissuade dieters from using it, as a whopping 120 calories could be the difference between a calorie deficit, and maintenance levels.
Especially when creatine monohydrate comes in at zero calories without sweeteners and carbohydrates present.
Though, the taste was very good, and many would enjoy how it tastes compared to other brands.
We think this product is worth trying, as it does contain some decent amounts of amino acids, and is priced well.
However, if you’re looking for something cheaper, or less expensive, then check out other brands available!
